How Apple and Others Wisely apply the What-How-Why Pattern to their Value Proposition: Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle Concept

For product developers and innovators, a value proposition is a tool that fundamentally addresses:

What are you building ?

  • Who are you building it for?
  • What does the product solve for them?
  • How does the product provide them benefits?

Product Management ConceptCreating a product in a crowded marketplace requires differentiation, and the value proposition is the place where powerful differentiation can be formed.  One traditional approach has the syntax…

The product does xyz for abc customers.

Simon Sinek introduced a much more powerful approach he calls the Golden Circle.  It uses the what–how–why approach to create dramatic differentiation and interest.  In his TED talk, he uses Apple as an example.  Apple stood out from rest of the personal computer and mobile device market – mature markets they joined late but won.  View Sinek’s TED talk below.
